The Sketchbook Project

The Sketchbook Project: 2010

I'm thinking about signing up to do this. You get a sketchbook with a barcode and a theme (you pick one) and then submit it to a tour (starts in Baltimore and comes to SF!). It's $25 to submit and then $20 if you want to have them digitize your work as well. (kinda steep but if you need motivation to keep a themed sketch book--this could be it) Sign up by October 31st, submit by Jan 15 2011.

It's put on by the Art House Co-Op who "build art project and communities" if you want to check out other things they do.

A Further Comment

As a further comment to Jacqueline and Oliver's postings on the unfortunate design proposals for the London Olympics, here is a visual comparison between "Wenlock," the cyclopian Olympic mascot, with Bob from "Monsters vs. Aliens" and Mike Wazowski from "Monsters, Inc."

London Olympics Logo

This one is pretty bad. And it was about $800,000 and took a year to develop. The English are protesting, signing petitions and submitting their own ideas (see below). I especially like the top right hand corner and left side second down.

Letterpress day

Hi All_
Here are my first attempts at posting pics to this
blog. The day started with meet and greet by resident aerialist, Paris. Although he liked the boys, his heart had clearly been captivated by Dee.

I couldn't figure out how to individually caption, but you know who you are. A fun day was had by all, filled with experiment and promise.

Looking forward to our next meeting and more letterpress days!

Thanks to all who attended. We missed all who couldn't be there. @

Letterpress Day

We kicked off 2010 with a bang! Adele hosted an amazing letterpress party at her lovely Altadena home and invited all of us to come and play with her new toy: a Chandler printing press. We had fun meeting fellow aspiring designers, setting type and making prints. Best of all was the spirit of creativity and joy we all shared.

Master letterpress printer, Dave, shows us how to set type by hand using a composing stick.

We unearth cases of lead type from Adele's basement.
Geoff: Wow, they're so heavy!
Adele: Well, now we know why they're called lead type.

The Chandler Press.

Geoffrey and Dan hard at work.

Geoffrey shows off his beautiful typography projects from the trunk of his car. We give him "thumbs up."

Cleaning and calibrating.

Feeding paper.

D adds more packing to the press.

Checking the impression.

Time for a lunch break. We celebrate life, art, friends and the new year!
